چکیده

Much literature on groupbrainstorming has found it tobe less effective than individ-ual brainstorming. However, acognitive perspective suggeststhat group brainstorming couldbe an effective technique for gen-erating creative ideas. Computersimulations of an associativememory model of idea genera-tion in groups suggest thatgroups have the potential togenerate ideas that individualsbrainstorming alone are lesslikely to generate. Exchangingideas by means of writing orcomputers, alternating solitaryand group brainstorming, andusing heterogeneous groups ap-pear to be useful approachesfor enhancing group brain-storming.

Illusory causation: why it occurs.

Considerable evidence indicates that people overattribute causality to a given stimulus when it is salient or the focus of their attention--the so-called illusory-causation phenomenon. Although illusory causation has proved to be quite robust and generalizable, a compelling explanation for it has not been empirically documented. Four social-attribution studies were conducted to test the hypothe...

1 Downward Causation without Foundations

Emergence is interpreted in a non-dualist framework of thought. No metaphysical distinction between the higher and basic levels of organization is supposed, but only a duality of modes of access. The emergent levels of org...

Agency, authorship, and illusion.

Daniel Wegner argues that conscious will is an illusion. I examine the adequacy of his theory of apparent mental causation and whether, if accurate, it suggests that our experience of agency and authorship should be considered illusory. I examine various interpretations of this claim and raise problems for each interpretation. I also distinguish between the experiences of agency and authorship.

A causal theory of counterfactuals

" A Causal Theory of Counterfactuals " (forthcoming in Nous) I develop an account of counterfactual conditionals using " causal models " , and argue that this account is preferable to the currently standard account in terms of " similarity of possible worlds " due to David Lewis and Robert Stalnaker. I diagnose the attraction of counterfactual theories of causation, and argue that it is illusory.
